Shortlist Royal Photographic Society Open Call 2021

Through the more expressive medium of black and white photography Natasha has captured this generation and their magnified experiences during the COVID Lockdowns without straying into the zones of cliché. This book brings together all the experiences and observations that Natasha used to accommodate the feelings of tension and trepidation that we all experienced: one species across the Earth. I have seen imagery of similar scenes from Italy, India, Australia, USA and Brazil – but it was the focus upon teenagers and students that really held my attention. Windows are used creatively both as a literal and metaphorical demonstration of the isolation and detainment of each portrait. The framing and composition create a superb record of the injustices suffered at such an exciting time of life. ‘At this stage, a bird will venture out of the nest and start to learn how to survive without its parents.’ Some of our strongest friendships and most important life skills are formed through the late teens, especially for those who move away from the ‘nest’. What Natasha has set out to accomplish is to document the curtailing of these vital experiences for an entire generation; We were extremely excited to include these images in Black + White Photography magazine and they formed one of our strongest Salon features for many issues.
